Album Launch Date Set – 17th October

August 12, 2012

I’m very delighted indeed to announce that the album launch will take place on Wednesday October 17th. I’ve hired the Studio Theatre space at The Roundhouse in London, which has a 230-something capacity. It’s a really exciting venue to play – it has so much history and atmosphere, and, since it was refurbished, is a genuinely exciting building to visit. Please come along, and bring a friend or two (or three) – everyone’s welcome. I’m also thrilled to announce that Andy Newmark will be playing drums with me on the night. It’s fitting really, as he had a huge...

Street Piano, St Mary-le-Bow

I had to go to a conference on NHS Benchmarking in Soho Square last week. Not quite as dry as it sounds but it was still a relief to escape to the small patch of green and ping pong tables at lunch, my t-shirt streaked with grease from the fourth sandwich I didn’t need. Always hard not to plunder a buffet lunch. A Chinese man was tinkling on an upright piano in the square. It’s hard to communicate just how much I love pianos. It’s an instrument I’ve played in one form or another most days of my life...

Grayson Perry’s Pots

We decided to go elderflower picking this Sunday evening, to make cordial. Wending our way through Nunhead’s back streets in the rain we arrived at the cemetery where the elderflower trees grow. Most of the flowers had aphids though, tiny black eggs crusting the stems. Opposite the cemetery there’s a large underground reservoir surrounded by a 10-foot, spiky-topped fence. It looked like a promising place to find more trees. Someone had been kind enough to cut a hole through two of the metal slats, so we clambered through and walked up the side of the mound formed by the...

Leaving Well Enough Alone

Leaving Well Enough Alone Olivier Kugler is working on the artwork this week. When we met almost three months ago he was working on a big job for XXI magazine about an elephant sanctuary in Laos. I’ve had to wait patiently for him to finish that before starting on my stuff. He came over last week to take some pictures and he hopes to finish in a few days before heading off to Africa for a gig with Oxfam. Laos and Africa sounds glamorous but he works so hard. His hourly rate would certainly be higher if he were...

Alice Gun

I saw my friend Alice Gun play last week. It was her first gig since having a baby nearly a year ago and in that time she’s gone from being a booze journalist who makes the most amazing White Russians and a musician, to being a booze journalist who makes the most amazing White Russians and a musician with a small child who relies on Alice and her husband for every facet of his existence. Thinking about it later on, I think I’d expected her performance to somehow reflect the routine and somewhat humdrum nature of child care. I...

House Concerts

Belgium House Concert pic

I did my first house concert in Brussels in Belgium last weekend. Belgium is two hours away by Eurostar but I’m not built along the lines that make carrying a wurly and an amp and all the other bits and bobs on the train a practical option. To be European about it, that’s at least 60 kilos of kit. So I drove, swearing at the London Bank Holiday traffic, kipping on a tiny ferry peopled by Eastern European truck drivers and finally bombing fast and easy along the E40/A10 into Brussels for 2am. The thinking behind doing gigs in...
